Best filters

This air purifier has two filters – a 4” deep carbon pre-filter and a 12” deep main filter.

  • Better than HEPA (99.99%+ at 0.3 microns)
  • Main filter has 4-39X more filter media - lasts longer and quieter

The main filter is the same industrial filter that is trusted by hospitals and removes much more than any true HEPA filter. It has 195 square feet of filter media and that is more than 4 times our closest competitor and up to 39 times what other air purifiers have. Most HEPA air purifiers have a thin filter and while marketed as HEPA they do not achieve HEPA performance. We have tested just about every filter that is out there and haven't found one that can meet this standard. This is important because they are not as effective in removing the smallest sized particles which are the one's that stay suspended in the air the longest and get breathed deep into your lungs. To remove these particulates an industrial grade filter is required, the more filter media the better.

Having more filter media also means the main filter will last longer (3+ years) and it creates less air resistance. By not having to work as hard the motor can spin at a slower, quieter rate.

These are the same filters used in Hospital Operating Rooms, Clean Rooms, the Nuclear Industry, Containment units, Laboratories, and Pharmaceuticals. Custom sized filters made by the only company in North America that makes its own HEPA media and made in the USA.

Best Motor/Fan

Erik has the best, latest German engineered EC motor and fan so it provides higher air flow for large square footage rooms while being quieter and using much less power. The EC motor is a much-improved technology over the traditional AC motor that nearly every other air purifier uses.

AC motors use technology that was developed in the 1800’s and use more energy, can have an annoying hum, and are not as reliable. They are common because they are very inexpensive to produce.

EC Motor Advantages

EC (Electrically Commutated) motors use electronics to convert the AC voltage to DC to run the motor. EC is the latest technology innovation whereas AC motors use technology from nearly 200 years ago. With an AC motor from China, chances are that the copper was wound by hand and the ball bearings are of low quality making it unreliable.

  • EC motors are DC so they are more efficient and use up to 90% less power and in the long term can provide significant cost savings.
  • Runs cooler so greater reliability.
  • More compact.
  • Has a proven track record in the telecomm and computer industry.
  • No motor hum that you get with an AC motor
Why does the motor/fan start and stop more slowly than an AC motor? EC motors have a soft start programmed into the motor to limit the start-up current the motor draws (there are electronics built into the motor). The ramp down after power is removed is only a function of the inertia of the fan and the friction of the bearing system. A high quality bearing system will take longer to slow down and stop since the friction is minimized (alignment is better, lubricant is better, etc.).
Motor Humming 101

The humming noise comes from the fact that it is an AC motor and all the magnetics are changing intensity at the line frequency. When rotating, these forces are aligned so as to rotate the rotor. When the motor is not rotating or rotating at a speed lower than synchronous speed, they tend to make things vibrate back and forth and that makes the humming sound. If you have an AC motor that starts slowly, the humming starts louder and decreases as the rotor and field come into sync.

Why Do AC Motors Vibrate?

This vibration is caused by magnetic flux through the core laminations. Known as magnetostriction, (a property of ferromagnetic materials that causes them to change their shape or dimensions during the process of magnetization,) its effect changes lamination dimensions... twice per cycle of magnetization. This dimensional change, although quite small, produces "sound" characterized as "hum."

I have an extreme allergy to birds and feathers/feather dust.  My doctor said it may not help, but it has!  There is a huge reduction in dust in my house since installing this product and I am feeling better.  I also love that it is made in the U.S.A., with a German motor.

Does what it promises to do May 24, 2014

The Erik Ultra Air Purifier is expensive, but worth every penny. We live i rural Oklahoma. Drought, farmers tilling, wind, wind, wind, means our house is full of all kinds of allergens. Add 3 dogs and a doggie door, and we had problems with stuffy noses, sneezing, snoring, all the negatives that allergies produce. The very first day I turned on the purifier, within hours the quality of the indoor air was noticeably improved.  We sleep better, and the dust isn't as awful as it was. I run it on high at night, when the noise level isn't an issue. At lower settings, the noise level is low. The negative would be the difficulty I had putting the  heavy filter into the case (it's a very tight fit), and the cover arrived seriously dented, which made it a real challenge to get it over the casing. Oransi replaced the dented cover within a couple of days (they have the BEST customer service!), so all is well now. I highly recommend this air purifier.

The Best! January 27, 2014

My tween daughter has very bad allergies. She's allergic to tree pollen, dust, dust mites, grass, and cat dander. We've tried lots of other air purifiers with little luck in helping her feel better day to day. This is in addition to using her allergy bedding, neti pot, allergy meds, keeping the house clean, etc. I spent a little while shopping for this air purifier and it was between this model and an IQAir (which I'm told is the "best").

But something I really liked about the Erik Ultra was that it has much larger filters than an IQAir (and you can see this when you see the product). Plus, I needed something that was pretty user-friendly and I liked the easy controls of this model.

Since we've started using it, my daughter says she feels like her symptoms are easing up most days. And I can tell she's happier and feels better. That makes me happier. We usually run it in her bedroom on a lower speed throughout the day, and sometimes we'll roll it out into the living room if we're all spending time there. It's pretty easy to move since it has wheels, but it's awful heavy. For us, the Oransi Erik was the right choice over the IQAir. Really thankful for the relief it has brought my daughter! Her feeling better was worth the cost.

Finally an air purifier that works January 27, 2014
Reviewer: Jim from FL
I have severe allergies and a serious need for relief. My allergist has recommended air purifiers for years and I have tried a few. Some of the ones I have owned though seem really skimpy on the filters and I didn't really feel a difference in my symptoms. After doing a ton of research on buying an air purifier and weighing cost and differences between models, I decided to invest in the Erik Ultra. I have been using it for about 3 months now and I am comfortable saying that I do see a difference in my symptoms. I'm not sneezing or coughing as much. I haven't been waking up with a runny nose as much lately and I think my air smells fresher.

The filters on this model put other air purifier filters to shame. These things are so thick and heavy, which tells me they have a lot of absorption power. Controls are pretty basic, but I'm okay with that. I'd rather have something simple to use than a big fancy control panel. It has to be said that this thing is pretty loud on high. I don't often use that speed and when I do, I'm definitely out of earshot. When I have it on low though, I can barely hear it. It's not the most attractive air purifier, but it does a great job filtering your air and it's really helped me manage my symptoms.
