How do you build the ultimate air-cleaning machine for allergies and asthma? It's simple; you combine the best filters with the best fan and make it in the USA. As allergy and asthma sufferers ourselves, we built the air purifier that we would want to use.

The difference between this purifier and the M17 is that this air purifier uses a carbon pre-filter for light odors and dust whereas the M17 does not have any carbon.

Best filters

This air purifier has two filters – a 4” deep carbon pre-filter and a 12” deep main filter.

  • True HEPA (99.97%+ at 0.3 microns)
  • Main filter has 3-30X more filter media - lasts longer and quieter

The main filter is the same industrial filter that is trusted by hospitals. It has more than 3 times our closest competitor and up to 30 times what other air purifiers have.

Most HEPA air purifiers have a thin filter and while marketed as HEPA they do not achieve HEPA performance. We have tested just about every filter that is out there and haven't found one that can meet this standard. This is important because they are not as effective in removing the smallest sized particles which are the one's that stay suspended in the air the longest and get breathed deep into your lungs. To remove these particulates an industrial grade filter is required, the more filter media the better.

Having more filter media means the main filter will last longer (2.5+ years) and it creates less air resistance. By not having to work as hard the motor can spin at a slower, quieter rate. Yet, it has the power to clean larger size square foot rooms.

These are the same filters used in Hospitals, Containment units, and Laboratories. Filters are custom sized and made by the only company in the US that makes its own HEPA media.

Best Motor/Fan

Erik has the best, latest German engineered EC motor and fan so it provides higher air flow to clean small to large square foot rooms while being quieter and using much less power. The EC motor is a much-improved technology over the traditional AC motor that nearly every other air purifier uses.

AC motors use technology that was developed in the 1800’s and use more energy, can have an annoying hum, and are not as reliable. They are common because they are very inexpensive to produce.

EC Motor Advantages

EC (Electrically Commutated) motors use electronics to convert the AC voltage to DC to run the motor. EC is the latest technology innovation whereas AC motors use technology from nearly 200 years ago. With an AC motor from China, chances are that the copper was wound by hand and the ball bearings are of low quality making it unreliable.

  • EC motors are DC so they are more efficient and use up to 90% less power and in the long term can provide significant cost savings.
  • Runs cooler so greater reliability.
  • More compact.
  • Has a proven track record in the telecomm and computer industry.
  • No motor hum that you get with an AC motor
Why does the motor/fan start and stop more slowly than an AC motor? EC motors have a soft start programmed into the motor to limit the start-up current the motor draws (there are electronics built into the motor). The ramp down after power is removed is only a function of the inertia of the fan and the friction of the bearing system. A high quality bearing system will take longer to slow down and stop since the friction is minimized (alignment is better, lubricant is better, etc.).
Motor Humming 101

The humming noise comes from the fact that it is an AC motor and all the magnetics are changing intensity at the line frequency. When rotating, these forces are aligned so as to rotate the rotor. When the motor is not rotating or rotating at a speed lower than synchronous speed, they tend to make things vibrate back and forth and that makes the humming sound. If you have an AC motor that starts slowly, the humming starts louder and decreases as the rotor and field come into sync.

Why Do AC Motors Vibrate?

This vibration is caused by magnetic flux through the core laminations. Known as magnetostriction, (a property of ferromagnetic materials that causes them to change their shape or dimensions during the process of magnetization,) its effect changes lamination dimensions... twice per cycle of magnetization. This dimensional change, although quite small, produces "sound" characterized as "hum."

Erik 17 Plus vs. Max air purifier November 7, 2016
Reviewer: Anne from Sandpoint, ID
I bought an Erik 17 Plus for my vaulted ceiling LR/DR area.  Then I bought a Max purifier for the master bedroom area.  I like buying products made in U.S./Germany (the Erik line).  The Erik is doing a great job and I like the bigger carbon filter for kitchen odors, but it is quite noisy, even on low, compared to the Max (assembled in China).  The Max on medium does not bother me sleeping at all and I like the fresh air coming out the top instead of the bottom like the Erik.  The Max on "silent" is barely audible but producing fresh air.  It  also has an ionizing option.. For me personally,  I wish I had bought 3 of the Max.  They are very sleek/attractive and even on high is quieter than the Erik on medium low..  I do not have any major asthma or allergy issues; have 3 pets and some sinuitis.  Will have to see how the purifiers each hold up over time. I would only buy Oransi products and good customer service is very important to me.

I can sleep again ! October 20, 2013
Reviewer: Anonymous Person from Ludlow, MA United States
I bought the M17 filter system about a month ago and was very happy after only one night. I was told by my doctor I may or may not see results, boy was he wrong. I was using nasal sprays and thought I would have to live with stuffy noises for life!  Also I like to sleep with it on at the lower to middle setting.... about as loud as a A.C. unit at low setting. The room smells fresh too!
