As pet owners, we are allergic to the flakes of skin or dried saliva from animals with fur or feathers. They get suspended in the air. Eventually, this pet dander clings to bed sheets, furniture, clothing and many other areas of your home. To prevent these particles from triggering your allergies, we’ve designed our air purifiers with advanced HEPA filter technology that is both effective and safe. This removes 98%-99.99% of pet allergies from the air. Additionally, all recommended purifiers provide pet odor control, relieving unwanted smells.

What Our Customers Are Saying

How to Choose the Best
Air Purifier for Pets

In this guide we will show you what you should consider when buying an air purification system. Whether you purchase an Oransi air purifier or another brand, our goal is to share the key points so you can make the right decision to get fresh, clean air.

Air Cleaner Filters

If you have an allergy to pet dander or are just looking for better indoor air quality the choice of filter type makes a difference. In this section we will outline the different filter technologies.

True HEPA Filter

A genuine true HEPA filter offers the highest level of air filtration for airborne allergens. This includes everything from mold spores, animal dander, dust pollen, and dust mites to fine air pollution particles. However, HEPA filters are not effective in removing pet odor. For this you will want granular activated carbon (GAC) and we discuss this below.

Air filters in the US are rated on the MERV air filter ratings scale. The ratings system goes from 1 to 18. With 18 being the highest efficiency filter. You can learn more about the MERV Ratings system here.

When it comes to the best air purifier for pets you will get better performance with a higher rated MERV filter. For the air purifiers that we make the Finn, UV200 and Max are MERV 16. In choosing the right air cleaner it can be challenging since most brands do not share their filter ratings.

HEPA-Type Filter

The HEPA-type air filter is a pleated filter. It is called HEPA-type because it does not meet the true HEPA standard. In other words, it is rated less than MERV 17. Rather than referring to the filter performance as "HEPA type", you will see some air purifiers listed as HEPA plus some marketing term. This is one way they differentiate themselves and indicate that it is a pleated air filter. However, without the specifications you cannot assess what you are getting.

Pre-Filter

An important part of any HEPA filtration system is the pre-filter. The purpose of the pre-filter is to catch large airborne particles such as mold spores, dust, pollen and animal dander. This will keep the HEPA filter from being clogged so it can focus on removing the fine particles. And the HEPA filter will last longer.

For more information about dust removal see our best air purifiers for dust.

In most air purifiers you can lightly vacuum the pre-filter to clean it. Make sure to use the lowest amount of suction on the vacuum cleaner so you do not damage the filter.

There are two types of pre-filters. One is pleated and the other is a carbon pre-filter. The purpose of both is the same (protect the HEPA). With the carbon pre-filter you get the added bonus of pet odor removal. However, if this filter is a foam filter with sprayed on activated carbon then the odor removing ability will be limited. If you are concerned with removing animal odors you will want to consider a carbon filter.

Activated Carbon Filter

In air cleaners the source of the carbon is either from coconut shell or coal. Coconut shell is more eco-friendly and in speaking with top scientists they tell us it also works better. Most air purifiers use coal based carbon. This is especially true with air cleaners from China since coal is cheaper and more available.

In it's natural state carbon will not do much. In order for it to work it's magic and begin to adsorb odors you must first activate carbon. I don't mean you need to activate the carbon but rather it must go through the process in manufacturing. Simply, it is a baking process where the carbon forms cracks and crevices. Similar to what happens to wood in a fire.

To remove pet odors you are going to want high quality and also consider the amount of carbon. You will also want at least 3 pounds of carbon if your odors are anything other than light odors. This is also true if you are looking to remove tobacco smoke smell or fumes from paint or cleaning supplies. Both require high levels of carbon and a thin carbon pre-filter won't cut it.

Square Footage

Another aspect to cleaning the air of pet allergies is to ensure you have enough air flow through the HEPA filters. You can have the best HEPA and carbon filters but if you cannot circulate enough air through them you will achieve the air quality you are looking for.

Clean Air Delivery Rate

What you want to look for is the CADR rating. This is the Clean Air Delivery Rate. It represents the air flow in cfm (cubic feet per minute) through the air purifier filters. For example, if the air flow through the filters was 100 cfm and the filters remove 70% of airborne particles then the CADR is 70 (100 x 0.70).

The higher the CADR rating, the larger sized room it can clean.

Other than a relative comparison, the CADR number we find it is not well understood. So, we will explain it in a little more detail.

The CADR ratings were created by AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) as a way for consumers to more easily compare air cleaners. Full disclosure - Oransi is a member of AHAM.

This is a voluntary program and not all brands are in the program. So, in a way it sort of defeats the purpose of being able to compare products since the others haven't been through the certified air cleaner testing.

Getting back to the coverage of a room air purifier, you can calculate this from the CADR rating. To do so, you can multiply the CADR by 3 to know to get an approximate room size for 2 air changes per hour. So, for our 70 CADR this will clean an approximate room of 210 sq ft every 30 minutes. If you want to clean the air every 15 minutes then the room size would be roughly 105 square feet.

The Clean Air Delivery Rate is from the highest fan speed. If you run the air purifier on a lower fan speed then you will realize a lower CADR. And therefore have less air flow. I also want to mention that will want to consider the noise level. This is why many people do not operate a HEPA air cleaner on the highest fan speed, especially at night if you want it quiet in your bedroom.

Other Air Filtration Technologies

As we state above the best choice for pet allergies and dander is a HEPA air cleaner. There are some other technologies that we will highlight here.

Some air purifiers use an air ionizer - sometimes called a negative ion generator. This emits a negative ion charge into the air. The idea is that airborne particles will pick up this charge and then adhere to the filter. So, it improves the efficiency of the air purifier.

There two potential problems with this. One is that with any electronic device like this there is the potential for the creation of ozone. Ozone is a indoor air pollutant. It is bad for our lungs and presumably worse for our pets since they have smaller and more delicate lungs. Ozone is particularly bad for birds.

If a HEPA air cleaner has an ionizer you will want to make sure you can turn this off if needed. The other issue is if you have things in the air like mold spores, by charging them you do not want to make it easier for them to stick to surfaces like walls where they could grow. You will want to catch them in the filter.

While this may sound negative, some people really like the ionization effect. It can make the air smell fresher. It's a preference. We just suggest whatever air cleaner you choose to make sure you can turn if off if you don't like it or not have it to begin with. The Finn and Max have a low level ionizer that can be turned off. The OV200 model only uses mechanical air filtration so there is no ionizer or other type of electronic device.

A cousin of the air ionizer is something known as plasma. In addition to the negative ion it adds a positive ion. In my opinion it has the same potential issues as the ionizer. You may see this listed as plasmawave technology or a plasmacluster air cleaner.

UV-C light is another technology. We have this in our Finn air purifier. It is meant to be an air sanitizer and used more in the area of mold removal. For a pet allergy, the use of ultraviolet light will not provide a big benefit. If your home is humid it may be something to consider.

Ozone generators are built to emit high levels of ozone into a room. An ozone generator is meant for commercial use. It is good at removing difficult odors like cigarette smoke. Ozone will not help with a pet allergy. In fact, it will likely do the opposite and create breathing problems for you and your pets. Especially if you are an allergy and asthma sufferer.
