Room Air Purifier Guide

Air purifiers are used to remove a wide variety of air pollutants. With an air purifier, you can have fewer particles of mold, pollen, smoke, dust, and dander, but understanding which air purifier is right for your specific needs is often a challenge.

First, it’s essential to know which are best in certain rooms. Air purifiers come with different levels of power and performance, so finding the right size is essential.

What Size of an Air Purifier Do You Need?

To see how to choose the right air purifier for your home or living area we put together this guide on air purifier room sizing.

There is an industry standard called CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate). This was developed to give consumers a way to compare the air cleaning performance of products.

It is a number that shows the filtered air flow. In other words, the amount of clean air from the machine. This amount of clean air is related to the size of room it will be effective in.

We suggest looking at the CADR numbers and not the room size that a manufacturer lists. This is because the room sizes across brands are not apples to apples comparisons. Some only show 1 or so air changes per hour and that's not enough to clean your air.

A problem with the CADR is that it is a voluntary program so not all products are tested. Of course each brand wants to sell their products and what we see is that if a product does not have good numbers they are not presented. Nobody markets their weaknesses. But the point of buying an air purifier in the first place is that it properly cleans your air.

Choosing an Air Purifier: Small Rooms

Air purifiers come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Some are made specifically for large areas and are able to filter out a massive amount of particles, sometimes on industrial scales. Other air purifiers, however, are smaller. Certain air purifiers are made for smaller areas, or at least are ideal for smaller areas. If you need an air purifier for a small space, look for some of these features…

Small Size

If you are dealing with a small space, you won’t have a lot of room to spare. For this reason, you need to find an air purifier that is small enough to fit into tight spaces. Let’s say you are purchasing an air purifier for a child’s bedroom. In this case, you likely don’t have a lot of floor space to work with, as most of the flooring is taken up by the bed, dressers, tables, toy boxes, and chairs. A small air purifier, one that takes up a minimal amount of square footage, will be ideal. The small size would allow you to place your air purifier in areas where it will be out of the way but still effective, such as beside a lamp table or between the dresser and a chair.

Quiet

In a small room, it's important that the system is quiet. If the air purifier is too loud, it can make sleeping, relaxing, reading, and even watching television difficult, but having one that doesn’t make too much noise, or at least can be set to quiet mode, will be very useful.

Dim (or Dimmable) Lights

In a small room, you don’t want an air purifier that is too bright. Some air purifiers have display screens and lights that are very bright, and they could keep you up at night if you are using the air purifiers in a room where you sleep. The display may be so bright that you decide to stop using the small room air purifier, which defeats the purpose of having one at all.

Able to Filter Multiple Contaminants

Even in a small room, you could be exposed to a variety of different pollutants. Indoor air quality can be surprisingly poor, so you need an air purifier that can filter out just about any airborne pollution, including smoke, mold spores, pet dander, and more. With the ability to remove a variety of contaminants, you won’t have to worry about you indoor air, as you’ll know that virtually everything is removed. Whether you live in a rural area or an urban setting, having a purifier that can remove various pollutants is important.

Good Air Flow Despite Size

A manageable size and reduced noise are important, but despite these qualities an air cleaner needs to have sufficient air flow. After all, if you have an air purifier that does not achieve the filtration you need, what’s the point in having the appliance at all? For this reason, you should always look for a small room air purifier that has decent air flow rate and high filter efficiency, which will ensure you get the clean air you deserve.

Finn air purifier

Finn HEPA UV Air Purifier

Coverage Area: 400 square feet

The Finn HEPA UV air purifier is one of the true marvels of engineering in the air purifying industry. This excellent machine has all the benefits of air purifiers, including the removal of a wide variety of particles, but it also has the size to allow it to fit comfortably and conveniently in virtually any room, including small bedrooms and even dorm rooms.

This small room air purifier has the perfect size to fit beside a couch, chair, or table and be barely noticed. It is only 22 inches high, so it won’t dominate a wall, but best of all it is only 10 inches wide and 7 inches deep. This allows the purifier to rest in corners and against walls without crowding your space. You won’t have to rearrange your already crowded room when you use this outstanding air purifier for small rooms.

Although it is small and convenient, it has surprising filtration power. The Finn uses an advanced motor to achieve excellent power, yet it remains quiet at the higher settings. In addition to the motor, we designed the Finn with a V-lock/V-seal system that ensures superior filtration.

Mold is one of the most common forms of air pollution found in the home, as well as outdoors, and this air purifier has excellent technology that makes it ideal for removing mold spores, which create breathing issues and problems for people with allergies and asthma. This air purifier has a two-stage filtration process, which removes a high percentage of airborne pollution. But what makes it particularly ideal for mold is the UV light. UV-C light can be an effective way to destroy organic airborne particles, such as bacteria and mold spores. UV light disrupts a cell’s DNA, so mold spores that travel through this air purifier can be effectively disabled, meaning they won’t be able to create more mold colonies. For this reason, the Finn is popular for homes that need mold control in a smaller sized room.

With the manageable size, excellent power, and surprising efficient, as well as the ability to remove mold and other forms of indoor air pollution, this air purifier delivers the exceptional results you deserve.

Oransi OV200 room air purifier

OV200 Air Purifier

Coverage Area: 400 square feet

If you want a sleek, efficient, and a powerful air purifier, one that is designed specifically to be placed against a wall, the OV200 is a great choice for you home. These air purifiers have excellent technology that gives it the ability to effectively clean dust, pollen, mold, and pet dander. This purifier can effectively clean an area measuring 400 square feet, making it ideal for bedrooms, offices, living rooms, and bathrooms. It’s also lightweight, so you can move it from room to room with ease.

The dimensions of this machine, make it a perfect small room air purifier. The machine measures 13 inches wide and 23 inches tall which makes it small and compact. Best of all, however, it’s only 7 inches deep. This means you can place the air purifier against the wall and you won’t take up a large section of the room. You won’t clutter walkways or already-crowded rooms, so you can fully enjoy your space while still getting the air filtration you deserve. Thanks to this compact depth, this is an excellent small room air purifier.

The OV200 air purifier also has functions that are easy to use. You’ll find simple, intuitive controls that allow for easy access to all the different settings. You can use the OV200 right out of the box, and you certainly don’t need a manual to operate the machine. Because it’s easy to use, you’ll be able to set the system to meet your exact needs, allowing for better enjoyment of the air purifier.

While the OV200 is thin, it is incredibly effective when it comes to removing air pollution. It achieves such excellent results thanks in large part to the three-stage filtration system. This system starts with a pre-filter, which removes many of the larger particles. After the pre-filter, the air then passes through a HEPA filter, which removes a higher percentage of the small particles, including dust, mold spores, and pollen. HEPA filters are one of the most trusted technologies in air purification, but we don’t stop there, as the air goes through an activated-carbon filter before finally being released into the room. Activated carbon is an incredibly porous material that can absorb some of the smallest, most microscopic materials in the air. All of these technologies combine to help the OV200 room air purifier achieve removal of over 99% of all airborne allergens and particles.

The OV200 uses mechanical filtration only. This means there is no electronic filtering technology that could potentially create ozone. This is critical for COPD users, exotic birds or anyone that has a compromised respiratory system.

To enhance the usefulness of this room air purifier, the machine has a built-in dust sensor that will automatically measure the air quality levels and adjust the fan speed to accurately match the needs of the room. The sensor only needs about ten minutes to warm up, but once it’s ready it achieves maximum sensitivity to ensure your room is given the appropriate amount of filtration. While Auto Mode, as we call it, is effective, we strongly suggest using the highest fan speeds.

The next feature that enhances the convenience of the OV200 is the simple remote control. With the remote, you have full control and there is even a convenient remote carrying handle that allows you to store the remote in a single place.

With advanced technology, a sleek design, and intuitive controls, the OV200 is one of the best air purifiers you can have in a small room. Capable of effectively cleaning the air in a 400-square-foot area, you can use this machine in bedrooms, home offices, and other convenient locations.

Max HEPA room air purifier

Max HEPA Air Purifier

Coverage Area: 600 square feet

If you want a slightly more powerful air purifier, one that still fits into a small space, the Max HEPA air purifier may be the right choice for you. With the ability to clean the air in a room measuring 600 square feet, the Max can deliver effective filtration, achieving over 99% removal of dust, dander, and other airborne particles. However, it has the slight profile that allows it to sit comfortably in a small room without taking up too much space.

Like the other two small room air cleaners that we have discussed so far, the Max has a convenient size that makes it ideal for bedrooms, offices, and even dorm rooms. It has a 17-inch width and a 22-inch height, but it’s the 8-inch depth that makes it most convenient. At 8 inches, the purifier can be placed against most walls without protruding into the living space. This means you can use it in various room without creating too much clutter, and it won’t protrude into your living space.

As a small room air purifier, it’s also quiet, even at the higher settings. The lowest speed setting brings a decibel level of only 34, which is less than the noise level of most bird calls, according to IAC Acoustics. The highest level, Turbo, is only 53 decibels, which is slightly louder than a conversation at home. With these quiet noise levels, the air purifier is perfect for home use, especially if you are placing it in the bedroom of a small child or baby.

The Max HEPA air purifier provides a great value to your budget. HEPA filters can often be expensive, but when you purchase the Max purifier, you will get a machine that utilizes more filter media. Essentially, there is more filter material, so each filter will last longer.

This air purifier uses three types of filters to achieve excellent purification in small rooms. First, it uses a pre-filter, which is where most of the large particles are collected. By collecting large particles in a pre-filter, the filter life is extended, making the cost of operation even lower while enhancing overall performance. This pre-filter in this machine is durable enough to be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner, but you should not wash it in water.

The next stage in our three-stage filtration process is the v-HEPA filter. This is the most effective type of filter, and it removes multiple forms of pollution, including pet dander, mold spores, dust mites, pollen, and many other allergens. This filter is so effective that it is capable of removing over 99% of all airborne pollutants that come through the purifier, and can remove particles as small as 0.1 microns. Add in the low air flow resistance and the HEPA filter is even more effective. To ensure reliable filtration, we designed a seal around the filter, which ensures the air does not escape the filter.

To make this air purifier even more effective, we have included a stand-alone carbon filter. This is an important part of the purifier for removing chemicals, odors that create smoke, and many other tiny particles. The activated carbon filter can remove light odors (However, if odor removal is important such as the smell of tobacco smoke, you will be better off with a large room air purifier such as the EJ120.)

The Max HEPA filter is designed to be more convenient when you need high-quality air purification. We allow you to select the right settings for your specific needs so you can accurately use the purifier. Night mode, for example, reduces the overall light emitted from the machine. There is also an intelligent air quality system, which gives you a visual sign of the air quality in the surrounding atmosphere. When operating in auto mode, the purifier can actually change its own settings based on the reading.

Altogether, these features make the Oransi Max HEPA air purifier more effective and convenient. You can clean the air in a small room, and still enjoy your space without cluttering the floor. Selecting the right room air purifier is important, and this unit might be perfect for your bedroom, office, or living room.

What to Look for in a Large Room Air Purifier

Large air purifiers are slightly different than small air purifiers. Although they seek the same overall goals, namely the cleaning of air and the removal of air pollution, they do have different characteristics.

First of all, you should check the overall cleaning capacity on any purifier you purchase for a large room. Air purifiers are created differently, and some are able to effectively filter the air in a large space, while others are limited to smaller spaces. Be sure that the purifier you select is able to match the size of your room. To calculate room square footage, simply measure each wall and multiply those numbers. For example, if you have an open area measuring 40 feet by 30 feet, you need a purifier that can handle at least 1,200 square feet. (40 x 30 = 1,200) As long as the coverage area for the purifier is more or equal to the room, you should be able to effectively clean the space with that purifier.

Fortunately, there are many Oransi air purifiers that deliver the outstanding room coverage you need…

Oransi EJ120 room air purifier made in USA

EJ120 Air Purifier

Coverage Area: 1,250 square feet

With the ability to effectively clean a space measuring 1,250 square feet, this is one of the top air purifiers available today. And we make it in the USA!

With such excellent coverage potential, this purifier can be used in large master bedrooms, office spaces, open living room-kitchen areas, and open basements. You will get the coverage you need for your entire home, but thanks to a relatively-small size, this purifier can still be used in smaller rooms if you want, making it an incredibly versatile air purifier.

This purifier is only 19 inches tall, 17 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. Yes, this makes it the second-biggest purifier in our lineup, but it still allows the machine to fit in convenient places, such as against a wall or beside a couch.

When it comes to purification, this machine delivers. It has an industry-standard proprietary activated carbon filter for advanced gas control, but it’s also effective for large-particulate pollution, such as dust, pollen, and dander.

This purifier has two excellent filters, starting with a 1-inch-deep pleated activated carbon filter, as well as a 3-inch-deep main HEPA filter. Altogether, this appliance is useful for gasses such as smoke, as well as chemicals like methane gas and sulfur gas.

oransi ERIK 650A large room air purifier

Erik 650A Air Purifier

Coverage Area: 1,560 square feet

Of all the top-quality air purifiers that we have available in our lineup, none provide more area coverage than the Erik 650A. This incredibly strong and effective air purifier is capable of cleaning a space measuring 1,560 square feet, so you’ll have the performance you need for large open living spaces, such as open basements or main-floor kitchen areas.

You can also use the air purifier to clean the air in office spaces and large commercial settings. Whether you need purification in an entire house or a healthcare facility, this large room air purifier is one of the best options available. It’s so powerful and effective that it can even be used in healthcare facilities or for mold remediation.

How does the Erik 650A achieve such excellent results? In addition to the outstanding filters, we have included a German-engineered motor that is powerful. With this motor, the air purifier is able to pull in a large amount of air, but it does so while using up to 90% less energy.

While the motor is powerful, it is considered loud on the highest speed. If noise is a primary consideration then we suggest the EJ120.

Of course, the motor itself would be useless if the purifier did not use the right filters. For this machine, we start with a 4-inch-deep combination pre-filter. Alone, this pre-filter has a MERV rating of 15, which shows its effectiveness for both small and large particles. It has almost 3.5 pounds of proprietary gas filter media, making it ideal for removing dust, pollen, and many other airborne particles. The next filter is the 12-inch deep HEPA main filter, which can effectively remove over 99.99% of all particles as small as .3 microns.

This is a large room air purifier, but it’s versatile enough for any room in your house.

While the motor and fan units are made in Germany, the housing and circuit board are all made in the USA, while the filters are made in both the USA and Mexico.

What are the Benefits of Room Air Purifiers?

Before purchasing an air cleaner, it helps to understand the benefits that come with having one of these machines in your home.

Reduce Allergies in the Air

Air purifiers are able to remove many of the most common airborne allergens, including mold spores, pet dander, pollen, and dust.

The overall benefits of room air cleaners to reduce the amount of allergens in your home is still being studied and debated, but there appears to be a general consensus among the scientific community that having these appliances will reduce allergy symptoms. A review of scientific literature conducted by a University of Louisville researcher found that numerous “studies support multiple interventions, including air filtration, as methods to improve outcomes in the treatment of allergic respiratory diseases.” In other words, air purification can be an effective part of an overall strategy for reducing allergic reactions.

Remove Asthma Triggers

If you have asthma, inhaling dust, smoke, pollen, and other particles can cause a severe and painful reaction. Asthma attacks make it extremely difficult to breathe, and they can be particularly frightening for small children.

Air cleaners, however, are able to remove many of these asthma triggers, reducing the chances of an attack. There are a high number of asthma triggers in the home, and with the right air filters your indoor air quality can be improved.

Reduce Smoke and Smoke Residue

Smoke from tobacco, wildfires, burning materials, and other sources, can create serious issues with you health. Causing and aggravating a variety of respiratory illnesses, smoke is a particular problem for anyone with ongoing difficulty with breathing, as well as elderly and youth. Through the strategic use of house air purifiers, as well as the reduction or elimination of smoke, you can reduce your overall exposure to this form of air pollution, which will help you avoid many of the problems created by smoke.

Remove Urban Air Pollution

If you live in a heavily-populated metro area, you are likely exposed to a variety of airborne pollutants. According to the World Health Organization, air pollution in urban centers comes from both mobile and stationary sources. Mobile sources refers to vehicles, which means exhaust and fumes from cars and trucks. Stationary sources are industrial facilities, such as smoke stacks, and can also include power plants, such as coal-fired power plants.

These pollutants are often outdoors, so most people assume they are not an issue for indoor air pollution. However, these pollutants can work their way into your home through open windows and doors. Even if you have the home enclosed, there can be a steady creep of pollution into your house. For this reason, it’s useful to have an air purifier in your home. This is especially true if you live near a major source of urban air pollution, such as a busy freeway or a large industrial center.

Reduce VOC’s

Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are classification of chemicals and materials that easily become airborne vapor at ordinary room temperatures. Essentially, they are organic compounds released by solid or liquid materials. VOC's come from a variety of indoor sources, including paint, paint stripper, wood preservatives, aerosol sprays, and disinfectants. When they are released in the air, they can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, and have even been linked to headaches and loss of coordination.

Can Slow or Stop the Growth of Mold

Mold is another issue for many homes, but it can also be reduced by the use of an air purifier. Mold releases spores that are used to create new mold colonies. Mold spores are so light and microscopic that they can float on the air and move throughout the home. To enhance the chances of creating new colonies, mold releases hundreds of thousands, even millions, of individual spores; all they need is a few spores to land in the right place and a new colony can grow. Unfortunately, this form or reproduction can create health hazards. Mold is not only an allergen but it can aggravate our whole respiratory system, increasing the chance of an asthma attack.

Mold can be dealt with by thoroughly cleaning any surface where mold has grown, but to reduce the chances of future growth, an air purifier is a great tool. HEPA air purifiers, as well as purifiers with activated carbon, can trap mold spores. UV light is another useful technology for reducing mold, as it can disable mold spores.

The key to purify the air of mold is to use HEPA air purifier systems while removing water sources and humidity levels. A dehumidifier or air conditioning is a good complement.
